Fool-proof formulae to stay positive when on social media!

Staying positive and mindful when on social media has become such a challenge for countless people nowadays. Social media is the current boom that everyone is still learning to deal with. The anxiety people suffer when on social media has become such a major issue nowadays.

I have often noticed so many older people talk about social media, its benefits and how fortunate the younger people are to have this unlimited exposure to the world and its happenings. They love the way we can connect to our friends as well as to our idols with just a tap on the screen. This very social media has brought the world a whole lot closer than it ever was by killing geographical distances.

Scrolling through our social media feed is what most of us do so many times a day. The amount of people we are connected with is huge. Many a times, we come across a post from the many ‘nearly perfect moments’ of our connections which gives rise to negative feelings. If you struggle to achieve the balance of your emotions when on social media, here are some tips that can make you feel positive;

1. Remember – There is a life beyond social media:

“Make your life simple,
Know what is important,
Disconnect with the virtual,
Connect with nature.”

Social media feed can be just as perfect as your dreams – It can bring you across many happy and colourful posts, pictures and stories that can make your own life seem dull. But it is during these moments that you must not forget the beauty of the life around you – the comfort and joy of your home, the warmth of an evening with your closest peers, the calming walk in your neighbourhood etc. Life is not only made of photos but with experiences and the moments that you have experienced, matter the most.

2. Post about the happy things:

“Don’t let your ice cream melt while you are counting someone else’s sprinkles. Focus on your own good.”

Studies have revealed that people who post about happy stuff, motivating and uplifting content, tend to feel a lot happier and contented with their lives. Also social media uses algorithms that identify what kind of content you post often and shows similar sponsored content in your feed. So when you post about positive stuff you tend to come across more sunshine on social media! 🙂

3. Avoid your haters or people who criticize:

“Watch out for the joy stealers – gossip, criticism, complaining, fault-finding & a negative judgemental attitude.”

This is so very essential. Let go of people who criticize you on social media. Having haters around you even if it is just on social media is unhealthy and will make you feel worthless about yourself. Haters are simply not worth staying in contact with. Staying in touch with them will only give you more feelings of negativity.

4. Do not make social media one of your mood shifters:

“Find something great that you are passionately excited about and keep tremendously interested in it.”

Mood shifters are things that do simply as their name says – Shift moods. Whenever we are tired, upset or disturbed, we all have our own list of mood shifters we turn to. If social media is one such mood shifter for you, you should try to find some other option. Staying dependent on social media to get your mood right is like handing over the reins to your feelings over to social media – Your feelings will change with the content that you come across. Learn to look at social media as something fun and do not take things personally or depend on it to make you happy.

5. Comparison – Nip it in the bud:

“Comparison isn’t just the thief of joy, it is the thief of everything. Keep your eyes on your purposeful path. Celebrate others. Cultivate gratitude over comparison. Gratitude turns what we have into more than enough.”

The number one thing that leads to negativity on social media is comparison. Getting into the trap of comparison is something that will make you compare the value of your life against that fancy Instagram feed that you came across. Everyone has their own moments – good or bad. Learn to appreciate them without trying to reach any conclusions or judgements.

6. Find your social media ‘Tribe’:

“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it your family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”

The importance of finding your ‘Tribe’ cannot be overstated ever, even when online. Find people who make you feel positive, fill you with the desire to excel at what you do, help you connect with your passion and create that important place in your heart. Connect with these gems – they are the ones who make social media feel like a boon!

7. Express Gratitude:

“Gratitude helps you see your rainbows over the thunderstorms.”

Gratitude is something that is so important when it comes to maintaining a positive mindset towards life. Use social media to express your gratitude towards someone who helped you, made you believe in the beauty of life again. This is one life skill that everyone should learn in order to create miracles in your life.

  1. Hi , these are really good tips. I think finding groups to find a tribe is the best thing I have done to try and not feel so alone! Although it can be a little harder to not let social media change your mood and post about happy things for me ha ha , this I just try to change.

  2. great article. I love your tips to stay positive. I didn´t realize when I post about things I´m happy about that I really am or if it´s the other way around, that I post happy things because I am happy. But it seems that there is a correlation.
